Coronavirus Statutory Sick Pay Rebate Scheme

The Coronavirus Statutory Sick Pay Rebate Scheme is set to launch next week!

Following the coronavirus outbreak, the Government have put together a package of support measures for businesses who have been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. As part of this package, Employers will be able to recover coronavirus related statutory sick pay (“SSP”).

A new online service will be launched on 26 May 2020 which will allow small and medium-sized businesses to apply to HMRC to reclaim any coronavirus related SSP paid to current or former employees, for eligible periods of sickness starting on or after 13 March 2020.

Employers may be eligible for this scheme if they have fewer than 250 employees.

The scheme covers all types of employment contracts including full time employees, part-time employees, employees on agency contracts and zero-hour contracts.

Employers can reclaim up to two weeks’ SSP for employees who have coronavirus, are self-isolating and unable to work or are shielding because they are high risk.

The aim of this Rebate Scheme is not only to help employers financially, but also to encourage those individuals who are at higher risk of spreading the virus to stay away from work.
